June Seminar at Saper Law: Cloud Computing and SaaS: the benefits and legal pitfalls of using online services to cut costs and streamline business operations

Last month’s Seminar at Saper Law defined “Crowdsourcing” and explored the benefits and pitfalls of “tapping the crowd to build your brand.” June’s Seminar at Saper Law focuses on two new terms: “Cloud Computing” and “Software as a Service” (SaaS.) For the non technical business owner, these terms may seem intimidating. They shouldn’t be. You probably already use Cloud Computing or SaaS.
Simply put, “Cloud Computing” refers to accessing computer or information technology services over the internet- rather than from your internal servers - at a much lower cost than buying computer hardware or hiring your own IT department.. “ Software as a Service,” a subset of Cloud Computing, allows you to access common business applications from the “cloud” of the Internet without actually downloading and storing the information on your personal computers. Popular “SaaS” sites available in the “cloud” include SalesForce.com, Google Apps (Gmail, Google Calendar), QuickBooks Online, Basecamp (37 signals), Mobile Me (apple.com), etc.
To explain how businesses can effectively use “cloud computing” or “software as a service,” Saper Law has invited Harper Reed, Chief Technology Officer at wildly popular www.threadless.com to speak to Saper Law seminar attendees.
Harper is quite a connoisseur of cloud computer solutions. He is actively building and launching products on Google App Engine, Slicehost, and Amazon AWS. He has experience with building and consuming SaaS applications and has been an early adopter in both fields. According to Harper, he is also “very awesome and incredibly good looking.”
Because Cloud Computing presents some significant risks despite its many benefits, Daliah Saper, Principal Attorney at Saper Law, will follow with a discussion of the various legal implications associated with outsourcing certain tasks or storing information on third party servers. Those risks include privacy breaches, trade secret misappropriation, and data loss.
